As part of the unit “How the World Works” students in KG1 Yellow and Blue at the RB preschool investigated the central idea of “understanding the way materials behave and interact determines how people use them to meet their needs”. Students experimented with different materials in the science center, observed the original state of various materials, then mixed them with other materials to see how they changed. Students looked at liquids and solids, and classified materials according to color, shape, texture and uses. The students then reflected on the various ways that we can use materials to meet our needs. This hands on, inquiry based unit helps students make generalizations about new concepts and make connections to their everyday lives.
